We are Unorthodox, the UK’s first LGBTQ+ Drum and Bass movement, started to bring queer people together as well as open up the scene to a wider group of people.

Rave culture was built by queer communities. Today’s scene has deviated from this and we want to bring it back to its roots, creating a space that is open, fair and accepting to all.

How we began.

In early 2020, a group of like minded queer ravers got together to discuss their thoughts on acceptance within Drum & Bass and decided something needed to change. Too many Facebook threads were filled with bullying, segregation and hate speech, not to mention the attitudes of individuals at certain events. It felt like the idea of “Peace, Love and Unity” in the scene had been forgotten, replaced with division, micro-aggressions and a negative reputation.

The idea was to start an inclusive LGBTQ+ Drum and Bass movement, however we wanted to hear from the community before starting. We headed over to a Facebook DnB Forum with 52k members to get their feedback.

What we asked.

Thoughts on LGBTQ+ Dnb event.

We created a simple yes/no poll to gauge if this could work.

Here are some of the responses…

Moving forward.

Despite 788 votes for the idea plus some beautiful responses, we were also barraged with comments from a community who clearly could not understand why it was important for LGBTQ+ people in Drum and Bass to also have a voice.

This was the point of no-return, a fire had been lit, and it was important not to let it die out. The concept had suddenly become reality and we felt an urge to help drive a new positive future for the Drum & Bass scene.

Our mission statement.

Unorthodox is a new LGBTQ+ Drum and Bass movement, all about pushing boundaries, exploring new territories and bringing cultures together.

Event.

Launch a new type of LGBTQ+ event, built upon a foundation of ground-breaking Drum and Bass music. Our shows aim to break the mould by taking inspiration from other successful LGBTQ+ events, whilst featuring a mostly Queer Drum and Bass line-up with alternative entertainment and performances. Establishing an exciting, safe and non-threatening rave environment for all to enjoy.

Opportunity.

Introduce equal opportunity for LGBTQ+ artists, through constant efforts to discover, support and promote LGBTQ+ Drum and Bass talent; in order to create a fair and inclusive scene.

Growth.

Help shape the Drum and Bass scene for future generations, by building a strong, like-minded community of artists, performers, ravers and allies. Drum and Bass has become established due to its loyal following; for its growth to continue, there’s a need for the scene to adapt and become more inclusive.

Our friends.
